Meet Country Dancing Em!

My name is Emily Faye, though you probably know me as "Em" in Country Dancing Em. I am a San Diego -based line dance instructor with a handful of public, local workshops and social events that are meant to get YOU (and keep you) moving!

I've created this website with a few simple goals in mind:

> For you to know where I am and when for public events

> For you to learn how/why to book me for private lessons/parties/events

> For everyone to have resources to become better dancers (and just have more fun) - yeehaw!

So proud to have gotten to help out a team of humans that are so incredible for building our community. Shoutout to all the instructors, mentors, marshals, volunteers and other staff for making this event possible!

I mentored for 9 incredible classes, got invited to help teach country swing basics for some follows at the Beginner Barn and helped marshal for (3-5??) competitions! So that, in addition to placing fifth in the comp I mentioned in the previous post, tells me it was a weekend well spent. 🥰🤩

Looooooong overdue NDF appreciation post… PART ONE!

This was my first time choosing to compete in a very long time. There was a point in time that I became afraid of competing for fear of feeling not good enough, and like my way of dancing was wrong. As a teacher, my ego simply couldn’t live with that.

Then something about competitions for Nashville Dance Fest told me that I needed to get out of my comfort zone, and out of this limiting belief that the way I dance is directly correlated to the benefit I can give my community as a teacher. Which is exactly how I’d felt… and what the competition did for me exactly. I received so much love from so many friends and strangers alike about how much they loved to watch me dance on that floor that it wouldn’t be fair any longer to correlate those two.

I ended up placing fifth in Finals for Intermediate Line Dance and while there was a bit of hope I could place Top 3, I can genuinely say I’m so proud of myself for getting out there. Watching these videos I can see what I could improve on should I decide to compete again, my resilience and commitment to ENJOYING dance, and also the zest for life that I already give to my dancing, something that I really try to instill in my students - can any of you say my first rule of dancing?

Thank you to @nashvilledancefest and team for putting on this phenomenal event for me to learn and grow, to the marshal team of competitions to get us running smooth (and not scratching me when competitions were running 15 minutes early and so I “arrived late” lol), to all the friends and strangers for giving me their positive energy before and after, and to this group of dancers in the second slide (is that who I think it is ?!) that were committed to giving me a photo where you could see me in the dark 🤣.

With that… I bid thee a YEEEEEEE HAWWWWWW!!!

I have NO ISSUE having a great time when partner dancing, especially when it’s with @oc_1775!! But to be honest, your girl’s technique does not feel consistent enough. I’m very self-conscious because my brain orients around math (which is why I LOVE line dancing) and while I feel pretty good about connection, my footwork isn’t as sharp as I know it could be, consistently.

So… you can imagine how excited I am to be starting @kickstartcountry ‘s program then to see how much I can level up 😍 Can’t wait to let y’all know how that goes!!

Now… Who will I see at @nashvilledancefest ?!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I am AWFUL at getting videos of me teaching. So I feel pretty blessed to have this from last night to share with y’all now 🥰

While this isn’t the full lesson taught, it is a thorough walkthrough of what we learned - Miles On It! This is an example of what it would be like in a workshop setting with me - “workshop” being we focus on the “FOUR FOUNDATIONS” in the “Language of Line Dance”.

In fact, here are those Four Foundations for you now:

Coordination - I often joke that this is about knowing Left from Right lol. But more importantly, other than the obvious of being able to comfortably travel and shift in all different directions, it’s if your mind is in command of those body movements! It’s wiring that connection together!

Rhythm - Taking coordination, can you now marry those movements to a steady beat and adjust as the music gets faster or slower?

Pattern Recognition - Again, back to that powerful brain we have! Can you identify different movements and reverse and inverse and then traverse?! Pay attention to how your mind is taking in the information - do you remember things better with rhythm patterns, with weight change patterns, with shapes drawn on the floor? This one plays a huge role in learning new dances “on the fly” rather than in a lesson breakdown.

Vocab - Then, of course, knowing fundamentally how line dance works! Make it your business to understand the clock reference, tags, restarts, and the names of different movements so that they come entirely naturally to you (Grapevine, Coaster Step, Rock step just to name a few).

While this isn’t the full lesson taught, it is a thorough walkthrough of what we learned - Miles On It! This is an example of what it would be like in a workshop setting with me - “workshop” being we focus on the “FOUR FOUNDATIONS” in the “Language of Line Dance”.

In fact, here are those Four Foundations for you now:

Coordination - I often joke that this is about knowing Left from Right lol. But more importantly, other than the obvious of being able to comfortably travel and shift in all different directions, it’s if your mind is in command of those body movements! It’s wiring that connection together!

Rhythm - Taking coordination, can you now marry those movements to a steady beat and adjust as the music gets faster or slower?

Pattern Recognition - Again, back to that powerful brain we have! Can you identify different movements and reverse and inverse and then traverse?! Pay attention to how your mind is taking in the information - do you remember things better with rhythm patterns, with weight change patterns, with shapes drawn on the floor? This one plays a huge role in learning new dances “on the fly” rather than in a lesson breakdown.

Vocab - Then, of course, knowing fundamentally how line dance works! Make it your business to understand the clock reference, tags, restarts, and the names of different movements so that they come entirely naturally to you (Grapevine, Coaster Step, Rock step just to name a few).

I hope y’all had a very Merry Christmas!! I was trying to brainstorm a way to give 2025 the best possible start, and while I had hoped to do something bigger I just couldn’t get the gears going in time to pull it off. The blessing about that is it gave me this new idea: “Family, Friendly, Fun!”

The hope with this is to give a “catch-up on the basics” workshop for anyone relatively new to country dancing (or ANY type of dancing) to build a bit of confidence, then providing a very short social afterwards to show how painless and FUN it can be to dance alongside strangers and friends alike ⭐️

Recommended age is 8+ but all ages are welcome, especially anyone that is ready to give their all to trying this new (and potentially life-long) hobby. You’re all encouraged to invite family and attend!

I’m trying to put together a little extra festivity for anyone looking to jumpstart their 2025 with a bit of gratitude and mindfulness (little ones with drawing skills are encouraged ⭐️🥰) so arrive to class up to 30-minutes early (you’re encouraged to!!) to see this little surprise in action ❤️

The next public lesson is this Wednesday 12/11 for our last Wednesday Workshop at @queenbeessd (all ages welcome)! In this Beginner/Improver workshop, you’ll learn Good Time and Body Rock, with a potential bonus: Redneck Angel! 💛

Coming up this Friday 12/13, I’ll be making an appearance at @renegade_country before hitting @countryremixsd’s Holiday Hoopla! At Renegade, we’ll learn Flatliner and High Class 💙

Then lastly, Sunday 12/29 is the LAST YEEHAW OF 2024! Catch me at @u31sd teaching 2-3 dances you NEED TO KNOW before the year is over! This will be decided based on a vote - start sending your line dance wishlist NOW! Final vote will be 12/15-12/20 on my story 🖤

Long overdue GRATITUDE POST to everyone that helped make the first ever SCHOOL FOR GHOULS such a huge success! The turn out was incredible and I’m so thankful to all of you that came out to @queenbeessd to compete, learn and DANCE!

I want to give a MASSIVE thank you to the talented and encouraging team of entertainment scouted: @_bootscootin, @russbradchulis, @souraya_lorenz, and @ez.dancing, y’all deserve a bow, an arm and a leg for all the help you gave me with this event - and our awesome volunteers too!! @_kneeyahh @drakescrivens @bryanrev55 @marinachw @ammzz19 @summerdey6

And of course, my heartfelt gratitude to @queenbeessd. From the venue, to their staff, their partnership (basically every resource), and BELIEF that we could pull this thing off 🎉🍾

I had such a great time kicking off my month at @temeculastampede last night with @d.j.nate and @djkermiejrock 🥹 Thank you to all who came out!

You’ve got me for one more lesson before I head out of town for a road trip with the boy, come visit me at the International Cottages for FREE beginner lessons today, and another chance to learn Dancin Disco Cowboy! 🤠

When I’m back, we’ve got more lessons at @queenbeessd and @u31sd, AND A GUEST FEATURE at @renegade_country, I can’t wait to be back! I’ve been working on my two-step and couples playlist for y’all, don’t worry 😂
